The Calathea is a very popular houseplant. This houseplant is recognised by its unusual leaf markings. This houseplant is an enrichment to any interior. When you give this houseplant love, it will give it back. Place this houseplant in the right spot and it will regularly give beautiful new cuttings and leaves. It will do this mainly in spring and summer. In autumn and winter, it is less likely to give new leaves!

Calathea care

How do I make sure I can enjoy my Calathea for as long as possible? Besides giving it enough love, my Calathea should of course be watered and in the right place. Once you have mastered the care of the Calathea, you can enjoy the beautiful Calathea plant to the full. Should you want advice on care, we can always help you with this. Send us a Whatsapp to: +31 6 15300202 and we will help you further to find the perfect pot + plant for your space! To at least get you started, we have some care tips for the Calathea. This way, you can enjoy your Calathea for as long as possible!

Watering the Calathea

With Wickplants, this becomes much easier. How? With the unique watering system of Wickplants, your Calathea will never again get too much or too little water. The plant takes care of itself. The Calathea is equipped with a wick. When the houseplant is thirsty, it draws its water from the water reservoir by means of the wick. So you never have to worry about the Calathea needing more water in summer than in winter. All you have to do is refill the water reservoir. When should I refill the water reservoir? When the red bar in the water meter starts to drop, the water reservoir needs to be topped up. This way, your Calathea gets the right amount of water, which it decides for itself!

Location of Calathea

What else should I do to keep my Calathea beautiful for as long as possible? With Wickplants, the right position is very important to enjoy your new houseplant for a long time. Watering is a thing of the past, but it needs to be in the right spot. What is the right spot for my Calathea? The Calathea originally grows in the Amazon region in the shade of large trees and plants. This is why this houseplant likes to be in a shady spot. In the shade, the leaves become most beautiful and this houseplant will encourage new leaf designs. In daylight, the Calathea can also survive well, but make sure this houseplant does not catch too much light. If the Shade plant is placed in too bright a spot, the leaves will curl and turn crisp. A spot close to where the Calathea is not in too bright a spot will ensure that this houseplant stays at its most beautiful and gives lots of new leaves in spring and summer!

Calathea pruning

The Calathea is a houseplant that does not grow very large. But it does get fuller! As a result, you don't need to prune this houseplant because it grows too big. However, you can prune the Calathea to keep it beautiful. You can cut away the old leaves! Do this as close to the ground as possible. That way, your Calathea will not only look fresh, but it will also save a lot of energy. The ideal time to prune the Calathea is in spring or summer, when this houseplant has the most energy.

Feeding Calathea

The soil of the Calathea contains nutrients. After 15 weeks, the Strelitzia has often already used up these nutrients. After this period, the Calathea will enjoy getting some nutrition. Take care! Only give the Calathea some extra nutrition in spring and summer! In autumn and winter, the Calathea is in a dormant state. Then extra fertiliser can even be harmful for this houseplant. So only give the Calathea extra fertiliser in spring and summer!

Is the Calathea poisonous?

The Calathea is not poisonous. As a result, you don't need to worry with small children and pets. However, we do advise against consuming the shade plant. So the Calathea is the perfect houseplant for a slightly darker spot. And if you have small children and pets, the Calathea is absolutely perfect!
